DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0330Z April 29, 2020

SMOKE:
Southeast US...
Light density plumes from agricultural fires are found over South
Carolina, southern Georgia and Alabama, and over northern and central
Florida. The plumes are moving west-northwest over Florida turning
northward over Georgia and Alabama, and northeastward over South
Carolina.

Montana...
A cluster of fires about 30-60 miles of Great Falls are producing light
density plumes moving off to the east-northeast.

California...
Several light density plumes spreading to the southeast are located
over the San Joaquin Valley.

Cuba...
Several light density plumes spreading east-southeast are found over the
eastern part of the country.

Gulf of Mexico/Mexico/Northern Central America...
A large number of fires continue to burn over Mexico and Central America
and are producing a large area of light to moderate density smoke that
extends over most of the Gulf of Mexico from western Florida into portions
of southern and eastern Mexico, northern Central America, and into the
eastern Pacific Ocean. Within this larger area of smoke, exceptionally
dense smoke extends over central Mexico into southern Mexico, Central
America, and the southern Gulf of Mexico.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
