DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0300Z MAY 15, 2020

SMOKE:
Florida...
A wildfire continues in Collier County on the northwest side of
Picayune Strand State Forest. A narrow but long light to moderate
density plume extends to the west for about 200 miles into the western
Gulf of Mexico.

Saskatchewan…
Agricultural burns are producing a number of light density plumes
across the southern part of the province. A wildfire about 40 miles
east-northeast of Prince Albert is producing a moderate density plume
that first moved to the east-southeast, but now has turned to the
south-southwest.

Mexico and Central America...
Numerous fires remain active across the region. Stagnant light density
smoke covers much of southern Mexico, Guatemala, and western Honduras
extending for approximately 200 miles offshore over the Pacific, while
also covering most of the Bay of Campeche. An area of moderate density
smoke covers northeastern Guatemala and the Mexican states of Chiapas,
Tabasco, western Campeche, and Veracruz. A second area of moderate
density smoke could also be seen over the Mexican state of Guerrero.
A number of small light density plumes are found near the west-central
coast of Mexico.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
