DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0315Z MAY 16, 2020
SMOKE: Minnesota... Several light density plumes from seasonal burns are detected over the west-central part of the state spreading westward into far eastern North and South Dakota. Saskatchewan... A number of light density plumes, generally spreading to the east, from seasonal burns are located over the southeastern part of the province. A large wildfire about 40 miles east-northeast of Prince Albert continues, and is producing a heavy density plume that is spreading to the east. Earlier, a moderate density plume from this wildfire was moving to the west-southwest before low-level winds switched directions. Gulf of Mexico/Mexico/Central America... The continuing significant seasonal burning occurring across portions of Mexico and Central America is responsible for a large mass of smoke covering much of southern and eastern Mexico, Central America, and stretching offshore to the south over the Pacific. The smoke also extends northward over the Bay of Campeche and the western Gulf of Mexico and into far southern and eastern Texas. Embedded areas of moderately dense smoke are noted within the larger surrounding thin density smoke and these are seen over portions of southern and eastern Mexico and Central America and offshore over the nearby part of the Pacific, as well as southern part of the Bay of Campeche and the far western Gulf of Mexico. A number of small light density plumes, mostly spreading to the northeast, are found over northwestern Mexico. Konon THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE. TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE: JPEG: http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/currenthms.jpg GIS: ftp://satpsanone.nesdis.noaa.gov/FIRE/HMS/GIS/ KML: http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/fire.kml (fire) http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/smoke.kml (smoke) ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS REGARDING THIS PRODUCT SHOULD BE SENT TO: SSDFireTeam@noaa.gov
