THROUGH 1700Z MAY 16, 2020

SMOKE:
Mexico/Central America...
Fire activity remains high across southern Mexico, the Yucatan
Peninsula, Guatemala and Honduras. A large plume of mostly stagnant
light-density smoke covers the entire region, extending towards the west
for approximately 100 miles over the Pacific ocean, and to the north
over the western Gulf of Mexico. Areas of moderate-density smoke also
impact the Mexican states of Guerrero, Chiapas, Tabasco and Veracruz,
in addition to central-northern Guatemala and western Honduras.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
