DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0230Z MAY 22, 2020

SMOKE:
Southern Texas/Gulf of Mexico/Mexico/Central America/Pacific south of
Mexico and Central America…
The very large amount of seasonal fire activity continues across portions
of Mexico and Central America leading to an expansive area of smoke
over the region. The thickest smoke was seen over southern Mexico and
extending offshore to the south over the Pacific. Moderate density smoke
covered southeastern and eastern Mexico, and the Bay of Campeche with
thinner density smoke extending farther to the north over the western
Gulf of Mexico and southern Texas. Scattered smoke plumes from fires in
western Mexico moved generally to the east.

Southern California…
A fire erupted in the San Bernardino Forest just southwest of Big Bear
Lake resulting in a growing smoke plume which was locally moderate to
thick density and thinned out as it fanned out in multiple directions
with thinner density smoke spreading to the southwest and across Anaheim
and Huntington Beach. Farther to the south, a fire to the southwest of
Lake Cuyamaca produced thick smoke which spread out over the area with
thinner density smoke reaching the coast north of San Diego.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
