DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0230Z MAY 25, 2020

SMOKE:
South Central Canada(Saskatchewan)…
Numerous seasonal type fires were detected in the southern portion of
Saskatchewan leading to quite a few smoke plumes. Some of the plumes
were initially moderate to thick density which gradually thinned out in
density as they moved to the south and southeast.

Southern Texas/Gulf of Mexico/Mexico/Central America/Pacific south
of Mexico…
Another day of widespread significant seasonal fire activity was seen
across portions of Mexico and Central America resulting in the production
of more smoke which covered southern, southeastern, and eastern Mexico,
a portion of Central America, the Bay of Campeche, the western Gulf
of Mexico, far southern Texas, and the Pacific south of Mexico. The
thickest smoke again was over southern Mexico to the south of Mexico
City. Moderately dense smoke was seen over southeastern and eastern
Mexico and over the Bay of Campeche and the western Gulf of Mexico. The
fire activity seemed to increase today over western Mexico with numerous
individual smoke plumes also visible moving mainly to the east. Some of
the plumes associated with the bigger fires were rather large and dense
over western Mexico.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
