DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0230Z MAY 30, 2020

SMOKE:
North Central U.S./South Central Canada…
Seasonal fire activity scattered across southeastern Saskatchewan,
southern Manitoba, North Dakota, and far western Minnesota produced
numerous smoke plumes of thin to locally moderate density which moved
generally to the south and southeast during the day. In addition,
a larger area of thin to moderate density smoke likely leftover from
previous days of seasonal burning in this region was seen late in the
day covering southern Manitoba, roughly the eastern half of North Dakota,
western Minnesota, and far northeastern South Dakota.

Gulf of Mexico/Mexico/Central America….
Rather widespread cloud cover developed and spread over southeastern
Mexico and Central America during the afternoon greatly limiting smoke
detection in satellite imagery in that region. Farther to the west and
northwest, significant seasonal burning over southern and western Mexico
resulted in substantial smoke which covered the region and extended
offshore to the west and south over the Pacific. The thickest smoke
again was located over southern Mexico and off the south coast of Mexico.

Earlier This Morning...
DUST:
Caribbean….
An area of Saharan dust was moving through portions of the Caribbean
Sea and extended as far west as portions of the Central Caribbean Sea.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
