DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0200Z June 9, 2020

SMOKE and DUST:
Central and Northern Plains….
An axis of remnant smoke, from fires over the past few days in the
Southwest, combined with some remnant blowing dust extends from
portions of the Northern Plains southwest into portions of the Central
Plains. Within the larger area of light density smoke and remnant
blowing dust, there is an area of light to localized moderate density
smoke from portions of southwest Minnesota into northern Kansas.

SMOKE:
Arizona/New Mexico/Colorado...
Several wildfires with light to heavy density plumes moving
east-northeast and northeast are found over east-central Arizona, parts
of New Mexico, and southeastern Colorado.

California/Baja...
A couple of light density plumes associated with wildfires are detected
between Los Angeles and San Diego and far northern Baja

Alaska...
A cluster of wildfires producing a light to moderate density plume
moving to the south-southeast continues over the far southwestern part
of the state in the Yukon Delta National Wildlife Refuge. Another
cluster of wildfires between Stevens Village and Rampart in the center
of the state also continues to burn producing a large light density
plume that extends a few hundred miles to the east-northeast. A heavy
density plume is located close to the fire cluster and is also moving
east-northeast.

Mexico...
Several small light density plumes from agricultural burns are located
over the west-central and northwestern part of the country.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
