DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1945Z June 29, 2020

SMOKE:
Southwestern U.S…
Multiple wildfires were actively burning this afternoon in southeastern
(Pima County) and northeastern (Apache County) Arizona, southwestern
(Montezuma County) Colorado, central Utah (Millard County) and
southeastern Nevada (Lincoln County), with primarily light-density to
medium-density smoke predominantly dispersing towards the northeast in
high winds. In addition to that, light remnant smoke from continuously
burning wildfires was observed lingering over the southwestern U.S. in
areas such as Nevada, Utah, New Mexico, Arizona and into Colorado.

DUST:
Southwestern U.S…
Remnant Saharan dust is still seen over the southwestern United States
including Nevada, Utah, Arizona and New Mexico prior to extending into
the plains and mixing with cloud cover.

Southeastern U.S…
Remnant Saharan dust is still seen over southern Florida, extending
eastward for approximately 750 miles over the Atlantic ocean.

Caribbean Region/Yucatan Peninsula…
Another surge of Saharan dust continues to spread to the west covering
virtually all of the Caribbean Sea and the islands as well including Cuba,
Hispaniola, Puerto Rico, and Jamaica. The dust also now has moved over
portions of the Yucatan Peninsula.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
