DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0206Z July 2, 2020

SMOKE:
Southwest United States….
Ongoing fires over the Arizona and New Mexico were producing areas of
areas of moderate to locally high density smoke that were extending to
the northeast and covering portions of Arizona and New Mexico.

Coastal British Columbia/Gulf of Alaska/Southern Alaska….
An area of mostly light density smoke that was transported from fires
over Russia was extending from coastal British Columbia northwest through
the Gulf of Alaska towards southern Alaska.

DUST:
Caribbean Sea/Central America/Eastern Pacific/Mexico/Gulf of
Mexico/western Gulf Coast states/Florida/Southwest Atlantic….
An area of Saharan Dust extended from the Central Caribbean Sea west
into portions of the eastern Pacific.  The area of dust also extended
northwest through portions of southeast Mexico  through Central America
and into the eastern Pacific Ocean.  The area of dust also extended
northwest through southeastern the Gulf of Mexico and into the western
Gulf and central Gulf Coast states.  An area of dust then extended from
there east through southern Florida and into the southwest Atlantic.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS.  AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED.  USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
