DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0310Z July 14, 2020

SMOKE:
Texas...
A wildfire between Blair and Nolan in the central part of the state
is producing a light to moderate density plume that is moving off to
the east-northeast.

Southern Rockies...
Four main wildfires are producing light to moderate density plumes.
Two are over southwest Utah with their plumes moving to the
east-northeast, another over east-central Arizona with its plume moving
to the east, and another over southwestern New Mexico with its plume
moving east-southeast.

California…
A wildfire between Idria and Parkfield just north of Rt 198 is emitting
a moderate density plume that is fanning to the east-southeast.

Northwestern Mexico...
Light density smoke was observed over parts of northwestern Mexico and
over the Baja California. Light density smoke was also observed out
over the eastern Pacific Ocean offshore from Baja California. A couple
of small light to locally moderate density plumes are found across
far northern Baja California.

Alaska...
A thin density plume moving to the east-northeast is detected about 60
miles northeast of Fort Yukon from an ongoing wildfire.

DUST:
Caribbean/Tropical Atlantic...
A light to occasionally moderate density plume from a Saharan Air Layer
(SAL) covers most of the Caribbean, the area north of Puerto Rico and
Hispaniola, and eastward across the western and central tropical
Atlantic.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
