DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0020Z July 20, 2020

SMOKE:
California...
Light smoke from the Mineral fire in central California, from the Badger
Fire in northern California, and from a fire in western Lassen County was
seen spreading over most of northern California and extending eastward
over southern Oregon and Idaho, northern Nevada and Utah, and further
into Wyoming. Areas of moderate-to-heavy smoke concentration can be seen
immediately to the northwest of the Mineral Fire and to the northeast
of the fire in Lassen County.

Idaho...
A new fire ignition located just south of Pocatello was releasing moderate
density smoke towards the east over Inkom and areas located 50 miles
downwind of the source.

  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
