DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1700Z July 22, 2020

SMOKE:
Northwestern U.S./Eastern Pacific off of the Oregon and California
Coast/Southwestern Canada…
A broad area of mainly thin density smoke which was elongated from
southwest to northeast was visible this morning off of the Oregon
and northern and central California coast and extending inland to
the northeast over northern California, northwestern Nevada, Oregon,
western and northern Idaho, and much of Washington. The smoke also
spread up over southeastern British Columbia, southern Alberta, and
southwestern Saskatchewan in southwestern Canada. A thicker area of
smoke was embedded within this larger thin density area across northern
California, northwestern Nevada, central and eastern Oregon, and far
southern Washington. The smoke was primarily attributed to at least 3
wildfires burning in Lassen County of northeastern California including
the Hog Fire and Gold Fire.

DUST:
The Saharan dust which was seen off of the west coast of Africa for the
past few days has progressed farther to the west with the leading edge
now reaching the central subtropical Atlantic.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
