DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0206Z July 30, 2020

SMOKE:
Pacific Northwest, Northern Rockies, Northern Plains, Upper Midwest and
Southern Canada...
A large area of light to moderate density smoke, from fires ongoing
over the Pacific Northwest and northern California, was extending from
portions of the Upper Midwest west through the Northern Plains, Northern
Rockies, southern Manitoba, southern Saskatchewan, southern Alberta,
southern British Columbia, the Pacific Northwest, northern California
and offshore the Pacific Northwest.

Alaska and Northern Canada…
A large area of mostly light to moderate density smoke extended from the
Northwest Territories west through the Yukon, northern British Columbia
and much of Alaska.  The smoke then extended south through the Gulf of
Alaska and into portions of the northeast Pacific Ocean.

DUST:
Caribbean Sea….
An area of Saharan Dust was over portions of the Southwest Atlantic
Ocean and then extending south through the southeast Bahamas, western
Caribbean Islands and into the central Caribbean Sea.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS.  AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED.  USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
