DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1630Z July 31, 2020
SMOKE: Eastern Alaska and Northern Canada... A large region of moderate to thick density smoke was observed over most of Northern Canada including the Yukon, Northwest Territories, and into Nunavut. Light to moderate density smoke was also observed over parts of Eastern Alaska. The smoke is present due to smoke transport from widespread Siberian wildfires in parts of Russia. The smoke was observed progressing Southeastward towards Southern Canada in most recent satellite imagery. Northern US/Southern Canada... Light density smoke was observed over parts of the Upper Midwest/Great Lakes region as well as over parts of Eastern Ontario and into Southern/Central Quebec Provinces in Canada. The smoke is present due to smoke transport from Western US wildfire activity and from Siberian wildfire activity. The smoke is progressing Eastward in satellite imagery. Northwestern US/Southwestern Canada... The latest satellite imagery detected several large complex fires with two present in Northern California and the another present in Southwestern Oregon. Light, moderate, and thick density smoke was observed progressing Northward from the fire complexes over Western Oregon. Light to moderate density smoke was also observed over most of Central/Eastern Washington and Southern/Central British Columbia Province in Southwestern Canada. The smoke is continuing to progress Northward in satellite imagery. Southwestern US... A large region of light to moderate density smoke was observed over parts of Northeastern Arizona into Southern Utah as well as over parts of far Southwestern Colorado and over Northwestern New Mexico. A large complex fire was observed to the southeast of Kanab, Utah along the Arizona/Utah border emitting moderate to thick density smoke. The smoke appears to be moving slowly and staying in the region in the latest satellite imagery. SAHARAN DUST: Southwestern,Eastern, and Central Atlantic Ocean/Southeastern Gulf of Mexico/Western Caribbean Sea/Yucatan Peninsula/Central America... Saharan Dust was observed over parts of the Southwestern Atlantic Ocean to the Northeast as well as West of the Bahamas over parts of South Florida into the Southeastern Gulf of Mexico, over the Yucatan Peninsula, Western Caribbean Sea, and over parts of Central America. Saharan dust was observed ahead of Hurricane Isaias which is presently over the Southeastern Bahamas. Saharan Dust was also observed over the eastern Atlantic off the coast of West Africa and over the Central Atlantic to the east of the Eastern Caribbean Sea seen this morning in satellite imagery.
