DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1800Z August 7, 2020

SMOKE:
Northern California...
The Six Rivers Lightning Fires in northern California was observed
producing light to moderate smoke that was moving off toward the west
across the southwesternmost Cascade mountains and off the California coast
into the near-shore Pacific Ocean. Once there, the smoke was moving off
toward the south near San Luis Obispo

Central Rockies..
An area of light remnant smoke was observed moving northeast across
northern Utah, Wyoming, far southwestern South Dakota, western Nebraska,
and far northeastern Colorado.

Western Colorado...
The Pine Gulch fire in west-central Colorado was observed producing
light to moderate smoke that was moving off toward the northeast.

Canada...
Two areas of light remnant smoke were observed over Canada, one over
northern Quebec and Newfoundland moving east-northeast and another over
central Canada moving east to east-southeast. These are likely leftover
from Siberian wildfire activity.

DUST:
Caribbean Sea/Atlantic Ocean...
An area of Saharan dust was observed extending from the central Tropical
Atlantic into the central Caribbean. This feature was moving west.

TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
