DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0015Z August 9, 2020

SMOKE:
California...
The Red Salmon Complex in Humboldt County continues to burn with
moderate-to-heavy density smoke visible over a 10 mile-radius around
the fire and extending further out towards the north into Siskiyou
County. Additional light-to-moderate density smoke is seen emitting from
the Apple Fire in Riverside County, dispersing towards the east-northeast
for a few miles.

Nevada/Utah...
Light density remnant smoke originating from the Apple Fire in southern
California is seen moving towards the northeast covering parts of southern
Nevada and western-southwestern Utah.

Central Rockies/northern Great Plains..
An area of light remnant smoke was observed moving northeast across
eastern Colorado, northwestern Nebraska, and central-western South Dakota.
The Pine Gulch Fire located between Garfield and Mesa counties in western
Colorado gained intensity during the afternoon releasing moderate-to-heavy
density smoke towards the northeast for more than 100 miles away from
the source.

Newfoundland and Labrador...
Light density smoke from Siberian wildfires is seen moving eastward
over southeastern Labrador and northern Newfoundland, and is expected
to leave the north American continent in the next few hours.

DUST:
Central Caribbean...
An area of light Saharan dust could be seen moving eastward over Puerto
Rico, Hispaniola, and the Caribbean Sea.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
