DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0210Z August 17, 2020

SMOKE:
Western Gulf Coast, South Central US and Western United States….
The large number of ongoing fires over the Western United States was
producing a large area of moderate to high density smoke that extended
from portions of the western Gulf Coast states northwest through the
South Central United States, the Central and Northern Rockies and then
southwest into northern California. Scattered fire activity over central
and southern California was also producing areas of moderate to localized
high density smoke over central and southern California.

Alaska and northwest Yukon….
An area of light density smoke, from fires over Russia, was extending
over portions of the northwest Yukon southwest through central Alaska
and offshore into the northern Pacific Ocean.

DUST:
Tropical Atlantic and Eastern Caribbean….
A large plume of Saharan Dust was extending from the Tropical Atlantic
Ocean into portions of the eastern Caribbean Sea and the northeastern
Caribbean Islands.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS.  AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED.  USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
