DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0020Z August 24, 2020

SMOKE:
Western and Central U.S./Southwestern and South Central Canada/Gulf of
Mexico/Northern and Central Mexico/Pacific off the Coast of Southern
California and Baja/Central and Northern Plains…

A very large plume is currently covering the entire U.S. region west of
the Mississippi river, extending to the north into southern Manitoba and
southwestern Ontario and further to the south into northern Mexico. Heavy
smoke covers central and northern California and Nevada, southeastern
Oregon, central-southern Idaho, Wyoming, the Dakotas, northwestern
Nebraska, western Kansas, Colorado, central-northern New Mexico, and
central-northern Utah. Moderate smoke extends outward from the heavy
density smoke area for approximately 500 miles. Lighter density smoke
associated with the same large plume also covers central-eastern
Washington, Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, Kansas, Illinois, eastern
Wisconsin, Lake Michigan and western Michigan, in addition to northern
Mexico and the entire Baja peninsula and adjacent waters. With the
exception of areas around Lake Michigan where the smoke can be seen moving
eastward, the remainder of that large plume is revolving clockwise around
the western states.

Louisiana/Arkansas...
Several small agricultural fires were burning across those two states
with mostly light-to-moderate density smoke plumes dispersing towards
the southwest.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
