DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1840Z August 24, 2020

SMOKE:
Western and Central U.S./Southwestern and South Central Canada/Gulf of
Mexico/Northern and Central Mexico/Pacific off the Coast of Southern
California and Baja/Central and Northern Plains...

A very large plume originated from numerous wildfires burning in northern
and central California along with other scattered wild fire activity
throughout the western U.S including but not limited to Colorado and
Oregon covered virtually the entire western and central U.S., and
extending to the north into southern Manitoba and southwestern Ontario
and further to the south into northern Mexico. Heavy smoke covers central
and northern California and Nevada, northeastern Oregon, southeastern
Washington, central-southern Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, the Dakotas,
northwestern Nebraska, northwestern Kansas, Colorado, and central-northern
New Mexico. Light to moderate density smoke was observed extending further
to the south over Baja California, Mexico and the western Gulf of Mexico,
to the west off of the coast of central California, and further to the
north into southern Saskatchewan/Canada. The smoke furthest east is
remnant smoke from previous days and has reached as far east as Illinois
and the Great Lakes region. Cloud cover over portions of northwestern
U.S. and North Pacific Ocean limited smoke detection in those areas.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
