DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0310Z September 2, 2020

SMOKE:
Western U.S./Pacific...
Large wildfires continue to burn in central and northern California with
moderate to heavy stagnant smoke covering much of that state. The plume
extends to the southeast over southern Nevada and central and northern
Arizona, and to the west for approximately 700 miles over the Pacific.
A second smoke plume is seen over western Oregon and southern Washington,
this one originating from wildfire activity in northern Oregon and
central Washington. That plume is stretching towards the southwest where
it is mixing in with the larger plume from California. A third area
consisting of mostly light-density remnant smoke covers parts of
southeastern Oregon and southern Idaho.

Colorado/Nebraska...
Light density residual smoke originating from previous day fire activity
across the western states was detected moving eastward across
northeastern Colorado, northwestern Kansas, central Nebraska and into
northwestern Iowa.

DUST:
Atlantic...
A large thin Saharan dust plume persists over the tropical Atlantic and
the western part of the subtropical Atlantic to the Bahamas.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
