DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 2355Z Saturday, September 5, 2020

SMOKE:
Western/Central United States, South-Central Canada, and Northeastern
Pacific Ocean...
A very large smoke plume dominates most of the U.S. west of the
Mississippi river, extending further north into southern-central
Canada. Heavy smoke covers most of the state of California north
of Los Angeles County, southeastern Oregon, central-southern Idaho,
and Montana, moving towards the northeast-east. Moderate smoke extends
outward from the heavy smoke areas impacting Washington, southern-central
Canada, central-northern Great Plains and areas just west of the Great
Lakes. Additional light smoke is seen extending towards the west for
over 900 miles off the coast of Washington-Oregon into the northeastern
Pacific ocean, and towards the south into Baja California. Isolated
pyrocumulus plume development was also observed over the Creek Fire in
Sierra National Forest/CA with thick smoke dispersing towards the north,
and over the Cameron Peak Fire in the Arapaho and Roosevelt National
Forests in northern Colorado with thick smoke flowing towards the east.

Eastern United States and Atlantic Ocean...
A large region of light density smoke originating from western fires
could be seen extending for approximately 1,200 miles from the coastline
of North Carolina to Nova Scotia.

DUST:
Central Gulf of Mexico...
Light and mostly stationary Saharan dust could be seen over the Central
Gulf of Mexico this afternoon.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
