DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0235Z September 11, 2020

SMOKE:
Western United States/Central United States/Eastern Pacific Ocean…
The large number of wildfires over the western United States continues
to produce a large area of high density smoke that extends along
coastal regions, and just inland of the entire western United States,
from the northern Baja to the Pacific northwest. Associated moderate
density smoke extended further into the Pacific and also extended
into southwestern Canada, Washington, Idaho, western Montana, Nevada,
New Mexico, northwestern Mexico and the Baja Peninsula. Light density
smoke edged its way across the country extending from western Canada,
across the entire Pacific northwest, reaching far into the Pacific Ocean,
encompassing northern Mexico, the four corners region and then continuing
through Texas and the central plains, the Mississippi Valley and finally
into the Appalachians.

Midwest to northern Gulf of Mexico…
An area of light density smoke, from the wildfires over the western
United States, was extending from portions of the midwest southwest into
portions of the northern Gulf of Mexico.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
