DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0140Z September 26, 2020

SMOKE:
Western, Central and Northern United States, Northern Mexico, Western
Gulf of Mexico, North Atlantic...
The wildfires over the Western United States continue to produce a large
area of smoke that extends over much of the United States through southern
Ontario and Quebec and then offshore into the North Atlantic Ocean.
Within this large area of smoke, an area of moderate to high density
smoke was seen from the Upper Midwest through the Central Plains to the
Central Rockies.  Another area of moderate to high density smoke was seen
closer to the ongoing wildfires over California.  In the western Atlantic
Ocean, an area of light density smoke was extending from Bermuda south
to the Southwest Atlantic Ocean.  Further to the east, an area of light
density smoke was seen well offshore western Europe.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS.  AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED.  USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
