DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 2355Z September 27, 2020

SMOKE:
California/Nevada/Arizona/New Mexico/Northwestern Mexico/Baja
California...
Major wildfires in central and northern California flared up again as a
result of windy conditions across the region releasing heavy smoke towards
the southwest for approximately 200 miles into the Pacific. Moderate
smoke was seen spreading across much of the state and into southern
Nevada and northwestern Arizona, while lighter smoke extended further
towards the southeast in the direction of New Mexico and northwestern
Texas, and towards the south over northwestern Mexico and Baja California.

Mississippi Valley...
A large number of short duration agricultural fires could be observed
along northeastern Arkansas and southeastern Missouri creating a plume
of moderate smoke across the area. The plume was seen dispersing towards
the northeast into southern Illinois.

Southern Ontario/New England/Nova Scotia
Remnant light-to-moderate density smoke from western wildfires was seen
traveling eastward over southern Ontario, Lakes Erie and Ontario, and
further towards the northeast over New England and Nova Scotia.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
