SMOKE:
California, Arizona, Oregon, Washington, Nevada and Northwestern Mexico...
Major wildfires throughout central and northern California continue to
produce heavy smoke. Heavy smoke is observed in Central California and

Pacific ocean off the coast of Central and Northwestern California and
Oregon. A medium Density area of smoke is covering Central California
and covers most of Northern California extending West 230 miles into
the Pacific ocean off the coast of Central and Northwestern California
and Oregon. An Area of light density smoke covers all of California,
Southwest Arizona,Western and Northern Nevada, Southern Idaho, most of
Washington, Western Oregon and Northwestern Mexico. The light Density
smoke expands 680 miles off the coast of Central and Northern California,

density smoke is observed
starting 480 miles off the coast of Newfoundland extending 1,200 miles

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE

  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
