DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0240z October 1, 2020

SMOKE:
California/Pacific NW/Western Canada/Northeast Pacific...
Wildfires throughout central and northern California continue to produce
a large area of smoke that extends from California north through the
entire West Coast into British Columbia, Alberta, southern Yukon and the
southern Northwest Territories. Over the Pacific Northwest the smoke
extended east into the Northern Rockies. The highest density smoke
within this plume was inland over California extending north northwest
up the Pacific Coast into western Oregon and southwest Washington.

Front Range/Central Plains/Southern Plains..
Wildfires ongoing over southeastern Wyoming and north central Colorado
were producing a large area of moderate to localized high density smoke
that was extending from the Central and Southern Plains northwest through
eastern Colorado and southeastern Wyoming. High density smoke was located
closer to the ongoing fire activity and extending into eastern Colorado.

North Atlantic...
A large area of light density smoke from the western United States
wildfires was extending from offshore western Europe back to the west
towards Newfoundland.

DUST:
Atlantic...
A large area of Saharan Dust was extending through the Tropical Atlantic
Ocean west towards the northeastern Caribbean Islands.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
