DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1730Z October 5, 2020
SMOKE: U.S./Mexico/Gulf of Mexico/Eastern Pacific… The ongoing wildfires burning in the Western U.S. continued to produce a very large area of smoke which this morning was seen over much of the Western and Central U.S. with the thinner density smoke also extending across the Southeastern U.S. Relatively thinner density smoke also was located over the central and western Gulf of Mexico and across much of Mexico and over a portion of the eastern Pacific though cloudiness there interfered with additional information on the smoke extent and density. Areas of thicker smoke attributed mainly to the wildfires burning in northern Colorado and southern Wyoming was visible spreading to the east across portions of the North Central and Central U.S. Thicker smoke was seen as well near the larger fires in California and extending up over far southern Oregon and far southern Idaho and across a good portion of Nevada and into northwestern Utah. More localized thicker smoke plumes were visible with the wildfires in northeastern Utah and eastern Arizona. DUST: The only Saharan dust seen this morning was over the eastern Atlantic. JS THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE. TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE: JPEG: http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/currenthms.jpg GIS: ftp://satpsanone.nesdis.noaa.gov/FIRE/HMS/GIS/ KML: http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/fire.kml (fire) http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/smoke.kml (smoke) ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS REGARDING THIS PRODUCT SHOULD BE SENT TO: SSDFireTeam@noaa.gov
