DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1700Z October 6, 2020

SMOKE:
U.S./Mexico/Gulf of Mexico/Eastern Pacific/Far Western Atlantic…
Wildfires in the Western U.S. continue to burn resulting in another day
of widespread coverage of smoke from the far eastern Pacific just off
the West Coast of the U.S. inland to the east over roughly the southern
two-thirds of the Western and Central U.S. as well as portions of the
eastern Great Lakes region, the Northeast, and the Southeast. Thinner
density smoke was also seen over the western Gulf of Mexico and a good
portion of Mexico. A swath of moderately dense to thick smoke was present
stretching from the Central and Southern Plains to the northeast over
the Ohio Valley region to the eastern Great Lakes region and up into
southeastern Canada where it became obscured by cloudiness. This band
of thicker smoke was believed to be primarily from the larger wildfires
in southern Wyoming and northern Colorado. Farther to the west, thicker
smoke was seen near the larger wildfires in California and covering
a good portion of California as well as southern Oregon, western and
northern Nevada, far southern Idaho, and western Utah.

DUST:
Saharan dust was seen this morning over the eastern subtropical Atlantic.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
