DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1750Z October 9, 2020

SMOKE:
United States, Northern Mexico, Southern Canada, Western Atlantic and
Eastern Pacific…
More widespread smoke attributed primarily to the ongoing larger wildfires
still burning in the Western U.S. was visible during the morning across
a good portion of the U.S. as well as far south central Canada, roughly
the northern two-thirds of Mexico, and a small portion off the west coast
into the eastern Pacific. Moderately dense smoke with embedded thicker
patches of smoke stretched from California and the Pacific Northwest
eastward to the Northern and Central Plains and the Upper and Middle
Mississippi Valley region. High density areas of smoke were observed
over central California, northwestern California expanding north into
southwestern Oregon, and southwestern Idaho just edging into eastern
Oregon. Continuing wildfires around the Wyoming/Colorado board are
producing a medium density area of smoke that covers northeastern Utah,
and from northern Colorado and southern Wyoming, to parts of Nebraska,
Kansas, and Iowa. Light smoke is observed across most of the U.S. with
the exception of the far northeast U.S.. Hurricane Delta obscures most
of the South central U.S. and the South East Coast.

extending west towards the eastern Caribbean Islands.

TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
