DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0200Z October 12, 2020

SMOKE:
Central United States, Northeastern Mexico, South Central and Southeastern
Canada, Gulf of Mexico, and the Western Atlantic….
Although an area of smoke still remains over portions of the United
States, Canada and Mexico the area of smoke is much less than what has
been seen over the past few weeks. The area of smoke seen was extending
from northeastern Mexico and the Gulf of Mexico north through the central
United States and into south central Canada. An area of light density
smoke extends eastward covering portions of Southeastern Canada and the
far northeastern U.S.. Areas of smoke were also seen with the active
wildfires over south central Wyoming and north central Colorado and also
over California. In these regions, areas of moderate density smoke were
seen seen over portions of the upper Midwest extending into southeastern
Canada. Additionally moderate density smoke is observed in small plumes
close to the wildfires over Wyoming, Colorado and California. Large storm
systems cover the Tennessee Valley, most of the Mississippi Valley,
south central Canada, and the northern U.S. plains obscuring most of
the agricultural burning that has been observed since September.

Dust:
Saharan dust is visible off the coast of Africa moving westward into
the central Atlantic Ocean.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
