DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0200Z October 15, 2020

SMOKE:
Southern and Central United States….
The ongoing wildfires over Colorado, Wyoming and California continue to
produce a large area of smoke that extends across much of the southern
United States from offshore the Southeast United States coast west through
the Gulf of Mexico, Southeastern United States, Southern Plains, Southwest
United States towards central and southern California.  Smoke was also
seen extending from the upper Midwest west through the Central Plains
towards the ongoing wildfire over Colorado. The largest area of moderate
to high density smoke within these regions was extending from northwest
Missouri and southwest Iowa west through southern Nebraska and northern
Kansas to northeast Colorado.  Another area of moderate to high density
smoke was seen over portions of southern and central California extending
southwest from the ongoing wildfire.

Southeastern Canada….
An area of smoke from the wildfires over the western United States
was also seen over portions of southeastern Canada just southwest of
Greenland.

SAHARAN DUST:
Tropical Atlantic Ocean ...
An area of Saharan dust was seen over the Tropical Atlantic Ocean
extending west to just east of the eastern Caribbean Islands.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS.  AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED.  USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
