DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1700Z October 18, 2020

SMOKE:
California, Southwestern and Northeastern U.S.,Northern Mexico, Western
Atlantic Ocean,,,,
The wildfires in northern New Mexico and central California continue to
emit heavy density smoke near their sources. An area of light-to-moderate
density and stagnant smoke covers most of central and southern California,
extending to the southeast over most of Arizona, southern New Mexico,
northern Mexico, and into central Texas. A large swath of medium
and density smoke covers eastern New Mexico and Northern Texas. And
area of light density smoke was observed over the north east coast of
the U.S. covering New Jersey eastern Pennsylvania, southern New York,
Connecticut, Rhode Island, most of Massachusetts, and extends 250 miles
into the Atlantic Ocean. Within the area of light density smoke over
the Atlantic is a large swath of medium density smoke. Ocean A large
area of clouds and storm systems covers much of the U.S. to central,
northern, and eastern regions obscuring much of the smoke observed from
the ongoing wildfires along the Colorado/Wyoming boarder and seasonal
agricultural burning.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
