DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1730Z October 26, 2020

SMOKE:
California/Pacific...
Wildfire activity across California was observed producing varying
densities of smoke this morning, depending on the fire. The Creek Fire
continues to emit thick smoke, with a fairly large area of associated
remnant smoke that extends south and west out into the Pacific Ocean. A
new fire in the Santa Ana mountains was also observed having been
initiated this morning. This fire was producing to moderate to thick
smoke moving off to the southwest. Another fire west of Lake Tahoe was
also producing moderate density smoke that was observed moving west.

Elsewhere…
Cloud cover resides across much of the eastern half of the CONUS as
well as over southeastern Saskatchewan and southwestern Manitoba. Cloud
cover over these areas may be obscuring the first few smoke plumes from
agricultural burns across these areas.

BLOWING DUST…
California/Pacific…
A widespread blowing dust event was observed across southern California
related to a Santa Ana wind event. Dust is being lofted from numerous
locations across southern San Bernardino, Riverside, Imperial, and San
Diego counties.

Tropical Atlantic...
Saharan Dust was observed extending westward from the African Coast out
into a tropical wave located east of the Leeward Islands.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
