DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0100Z October 30, 2020

SMOKE:
California, Northwestern U.S., Southern British Columbia, and the
Pacific Ocean…
Thin to moderately dense smoke with locally thicker smoke closer to
the Creek Fire, Rattlesnake, and SQF Complex was seen spreading to the
west and southwest covering an area reaching from northern California
to southern California and extending approximately 130 miles into the
Pacific Ocean. Numerous wild fires in northern California, Oregon, and
Idaho are emitting smaller plumes near their source with moderate to high
density smoke. Agricultural burning in the northwestern U.S. and British
Colombia has produced an area of light density smoke that extends from
the Washington/British Colombia boarder across northern Idaho and into
Western Montana.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS.  AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED.  USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
