DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1700Z November 1, 2020

SMOKE:
California/Far Eastern Pacific off the California coast...
The latest GOES Visible satellite imagery from this morning observed a
region of light to moderate density smoke offshore from the Southwestern
California coastline. Fire complex activity was observed in East-Central
California in the Sierra Nevada mountain range region and light to
moderate density smoke was observed over parts of the San Joaquin Valley
due to the fire complex activity occurring in the region.

Saharan Dust:
West Africa/Eastern Atlantic Ocean...
A region of light to moderate density Saharan dust was observed in this
morning’s GOES Visible satellite imagery off the West African coast
over parts of the Eastern Atlantic Ocean.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS.  AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED.  USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
