DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1700Z November 6, 2020

SMOKE:
California...
The continuing wild fires in east central California were producing
areas of smoke over central and southern California. Most of this smoke
is of light density with the exception of an area of moderate density
smoke near their sources. Cloud cover over much of the state conceals
any additional smoke.

Texas, Louisiana and Mississippi...
Two areas of light density smoke believed to be mainly from seasonal and
agricultural fires were observed over eastern Texas and a second plume
that starts in southeast Louisiana and extends north into central and
eastern Mississippi.

Western U.S., Canada...
Cloud cover extends from the central plain through the west coast of
the U.S. and covers much of southern Canada obscuring any further smoke
analysis at this time.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS.  AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED.  USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
