DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1700Z November 24, 2020

SMOKE:
Southeastern U.S…
A leftover patch of thin density smoke from yesterday’s round of
seasonal/agricultural fire activity in the Southeastern U.S. was visible
this morning moving to the northwest over western Alabama. A few new
thin density smoke plumes were beginning to be seen from today’s
seasonal/agricultural burning in the Southeastern U.S. especially with
the agricultural fires on the southern periphery of Lake Okeechobee in
southern Florida. In that area, a number of thin density smoke plumes
were seen quickly moving off to the west.

DUST:
Northern Mexico…
A few swaths of blowing dust were beginning to form and move rapidly to
the west from sources in northern Chihuahua in far north central Mexico.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS.  AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED.  USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
