DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0200Z December 13, 2020

SMOKE:
Southeastern United States...
Agricultural burning and seasonal fire activity was observed over parts of
the Southeastern U.S. over Northwestern Florida and into Central/Southern
Georgia. Light density smoke was observed from the fire activity ahead
of a weather system in satellite imagery.

Mexico/Gulf of Mexico...
A region of light to moderate density smoke was observed over the
states of Veracruz and Tabasco. Light density smoke was also observed
over coastal Eastern Mexico from seasonal fire activity observed in
the region and out over parts of the Western Gulf of Mexico in evening
satellite imagery.

Dust...
Southern California...
A small region of blowing dust was observed north of the Anza-Borrego
Desert State  park region in Southern California progressing southeastward
in satellite imagery this evening.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS.  AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED.  USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
