DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0200Z December 14, 2020

SMOKE:
Continental United States...
The latest GOES Visible satellite imagery observed a weather system
progressing through the Western U.S. and another weather system
progressing towards the Southeastern U.S. No large regions of smoke
were observed over the continental United States in this evening’s
satellite imagery.

Mexico/Southwestern and Western Gulf of Mexico...
A small region of moderate to heavy density smoke was observed in the
state of Tabasco. Moderate density smoke was also observed over a small
region of the Southwestern Gulf of Mexico. A large region of light density
smoke was observed from seasonal fire activity in the state of Veracruz
and also along coastal Eastern Mexico and offshore out over the Western
Gulf of Mexico in this evening’s satellite imagery.

Dust...
Northwestern Mexico and Western Texas...
A small region of blowing dust was observed moving southwestward offshore
out over the Eastern Pacific Ocean from the Central Baja of California
in Northwestern Mexico. A region of blowing dust was observed along
the Texas/Mexico border in the Del Rio/West Texas region progressing

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
