DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0200Z December 23, 2020

SMOKE...
Central and Southeastern United States ...
Agricultural burning and seasonal fire activity was observed over a
large portion of the Central and Southeastern U.S. The fire activity
was observed mainly in the Central Plains west of the Mississippi River,
but as well in parts of the Northern and Southern Plains. Fire activity
was more widespread however over parts of the Southeastern U.S. Light
density smoke was observed from the fires in this evening’s GOES
visible satellite imagery.

Western U.S and Northwestern Mexico...
Fire activity was observed over parts of the Western U.S. including parts
of Central/Northern California, Oregon, and Washington State. Light to
moderate density smoke was observed from a fire complex in North-Central
Oregon. Fire activity was also observed in Northwestern Mexico around
the Northern Baja. Light to moderate density smoke was also observed
from the fires in GOES visible satellite imagery.

Mexico and Southwestern Gulf of Mexico...
Seasonal fire activity was observed over parts of Mexico with mainly
light density smoke emitted from the fires. Light to moderate density
smoke from offshore drilling platforms was observed over the Southwestern
Gulf of Mexico progressing westward in this evening’s GOES visible
satellite imagery.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
