DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 2330Z January 1, 2022

SMOKE:
No significant areas smoke were observed in satellite imagery this
afternoon.

DUST:
Texas...
Blowing dust could be seen forming off western Texas, in particular
over Pecos, Howard, Mitchell, Scurry, and Fisher counties, and along the
border with Mexico in Presidio County. The dust plumes were dispersing
toward the east.

SMOKE/AEROSOL:
Northwestern Cuba/Western Gulf of Mexico/Bay of Campeche/Pacific Ocean
off southern Mexico and Guatemala coastlines...
An aerosol plume linked to gas flaring and other urban/industrial
activities was seen originating from northwestern Cuba. The plume was
dispersing toward the northwest over the Gulf of Mexico, approaching
the coastline of the Florida Panhandle. Two large aerosol plumes were
also observed across the western Gulf of Mexico and over the Pacific
ocean off southern Mexico and Guatemala. Similarly, these plumes are
associated with gas flaring and other urban/industrial activities, with
additional contribution from scattered fires seen across the region.
The plume along the western Gulf of Mexico is being pushed north-northeast
in the general direction of Louisiana’s coastline, whereas the plume
over the Pacific ocean is mostly stagnant.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
