DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0200Z January 17, 2021

SMOKE:
South Central and Southeastern U.S…
Numerous primarily thin density smoke plumes were visible with seasonal
type fire activity over the South Central and Southeastern U.S. during
the day. The smoke moved generally to the east and southeast.

San Clemente Island/CA…
The large vegetation fire in San Clemente Island off the coast of southern
California continued to produce smoke of mainly thin to locally moderate
density closer to the source with the smoke moving well to the south
over the Pacific for much of the day. However, a change in wind direction
closer to the fire later in the day resulted in the smoke shifting more
to the southwest during the late afternoon.

DUST:
Texas/Gulf of Mexico…
The large area of blowing dust which was likely kicked up yesterday
by strong winds over the South Central U.S. was still visible over a
portion of southeastern Texas and extending offshore over the western
Gulf of Mexico.

Colorado…
Newly formed streaks of generally thin density blowing dust originated
from sources over eastern Colorado and moved to the south and southeast
over the remainder of eastern and southeastern Colorado, far southwestern
Kansas, and and the panhandle of western Oklahoma and northwestern Texas.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
