DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0030Z January 31, 2021

SMOKE:
Southeastern CONUS…
Generally small agricultural burns with mainly light smoke plumes were
observed from Alabama into south Florida. These smoke plumes were moving
east across the Florida Peninsula and the Atlantic Coast while smoke
plumes across the Florida Panhandle and Alabama were moving north ahead
of an approaching cold front.

Mexico…
Widespread scattered burning activity was observed across much of central
and southern Mexico. The most dense area of burning was observed in
central Veracruz, where dozens of fires were emanating small and light
smoke plumes that were moving northwestward. Fires across Jalisco and
Michoacan were moving eastward and southward, respectively.

BLOWING DUST:
Texas & Oklahoma…
Dust was observed across the Texas Peninsula extending southward into
northwest Texas and then east across the Red River Valley and the rest of
north Texas. The dust was likely lofted from areas near the Front Range
that had now made it as far south as Texas. This area of dust was lofted
by a potent storm system over the central CONUS and is likely becoming
incorporated into the storm.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
