DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0250Z February 4, 2021

SMOKE:
Southeastern U.S., Eastern & Southeastern Texas ...
Across the Southeastern U.S. widespread light density smoke plumes (over
50) with areas of moderate and some heavy density smoke mostly due to
seasonal burning were observed with the smoke generally moving in a
southeasterly direction with the exception of Mississippi where the
smoke is generally moving in a northerly direction. In southeastern
Texas a large area of light density smoke with an area of moderate
density smoke near the source most likely due to seasonal burning was
observed with the smoke moving northerly in direction. In eastern Texas
a few light density smoke plumes with areas of moderate density smoke
near the sources due to seasonal burning were observed with the smoke
moving northerly in direction.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS.  AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED.  USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
