DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0130Z February 28, 2021
SMOKE: Southeastern U.S., California... Across the Southeastern U.S. widespread agricultural burning was observed but by afternoon clouds moved in and covered most of the smoke which is usually of light density with a few areas of moderate and heavy smoke. In central California a light to heavy density smoke plume possibly attributed to wildfires was observed moving south in direction. Western Oklahoma, Eastern Colorado, and Western Kansas… In Western Oklahoma, Eastern Colorado, two large light density smoke plumes attributed to probable seasonal burning were observed moving in a northeasterly direction into Western Kansas. Mexico and Western Gulf of Mexico/Eastern Pacific Ocean... A large region of light density smoke was observed over most of Coastal Eastern Mexico, parts of Southern Mexico, and out over parts of the Western Gulf of Mexico and the Bay of Campeche. Light density smoke was also observed over parts of Southern Mexico and the Eastern Pacific Ocean. The plume appears to consist of smoke from seasonal fires in the region, in addition to gas flaring activity in the Bay of Campeche as well as isolated urban pollution/aerosols. DUST: Eastern/Central Tropical Atlantic Ocean... A large region of Saharan Dust was observed across most of the Eastern and Central Tropical Atlantic Ocean into the Eastern Caribbean Ocean. Eglin THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE. TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE: JPEG: http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/currenthms.jpg GIS: ftp://satpsanone.nesdis.noaa.gov/FIRE/HMS/GIS/ KML: http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/fire.kml (fire) http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/smoke.kml (smoke) ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS REGARDING THIS PRODUCT SHOULD BE SENT TO: SSDFireTeam@noaa.gov
