DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0220Z March 01, 2021

SMOKE:
Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Northern Mexico...
In southeastern Arizona two light to moderate density smoke plumes
attributed to wildfires was observed moving southeast in direction over
southern New Mexico, western Texas and northern Mexico.

Mexico, Texas, and Western Gulf of Mexico/Eastern Pacific Ocean...
A large region of light density smoke was observed over most of Coastal
Eastern Mexico, parts of Southern Mexico and southern Texas. The
plume appears to consist of smoke from seasonal fires in the region,
in addition to gas flaring activity in the Bay of Campeche as well as
isolated urban pollution/aerosols. Light density smoke was observed
from offshore drilling platforms progressing northwest in direction.

California…
In northern California a light density smoke plume attributed to seasonal
fires was observed moving southwest in direction over the western Pacific
ocean. In central California a light to moderate density smoke plume
attributed to wildfires was observed moving north in direction.

DUST:
Atlantic Ocean...
An area of Saharan dust was observed across the eastern part of the
tropical Atlantic.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
