DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1740Z March 5, 2021

SMOKE:
Florida...
Throughout much of Florida, widespread agricultural burning was
observed. The mainly light smoke was seen moving off toward the west
throughout the afternoon.

Southeastern CONUS…
From Georgia into North Carolina, widespread presumably agricultural
burning was observed. The smoke emanating from these burns was mainly
moving off toward the south or south-southeast with a few puffs moving
off toward the southwest across central Georgia.

Central Plains…
Across eastern Nebraska and eastern Kansas, light smoke plumes from
further agricultural burning activity was observed moving off mainly
toward the southwest. However, a couple smoke plumes across central
Nebraska were observed moving off toward the southeast.

Southwestern Mexico…
Scattered fire activity was also noted across southwestern Mexico
(mainly in the states of Jalisco and Michoacan). Much of the smoke was
fairly light in nature, but one fire in particular in central Michoacan
was producing heavy smoke that was moving off toward the south and
south-southwest.

Cuba…
Smoke production from agricultural burning was observed across Cuba as
well. Smoke was generally moving eastward across eastern Cuba while
smoke across central and western Cuba was moving towards the south
and south-west.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
