DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1657Z March 10, 2021

SMOKE:
Eastern United States, Atlantic Ocean...
A large area of remnant light density smoke from yesterdays widespread
seasonal fires covered portions of eastern Alabama in the southwest
through northern Georgia, eastern Indiana, eastern Kentucky, Mississippi,
southern Indiana, southern Ohio, southern Virginia, northern South
Carolina, most of West Virginia and North Carolina. The smoke is moving
east over the Atlantic Ocean.

Mexico and Western Gulf of Mexico/Eastern Pacific Ocean...
A large region of light density smoke was observed over most of Coastal
Eastern Mexico, parts of Southern Mexico, and out over parts of the
Western Gulf of Mexico and the Bay of Campeche. Light density smoke was
also observed over parts of Southern Mexico and the Eastern Pacific
Ocean. The plumes appears to consist of smoke from seasonal fires in
the region, in addition to gas flaring activity in the Bay of Campeche
as well as isolated urban pollution/aerosols. Light density smoke was
observed from several offshore drilling platforms in the Southwestern
Gulf of Mexico progressing to the northwest.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
