DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1630Z March 11, 2021

SMOKE:
Mid-Atlantic Region/Southeast…
A leftover patch of thin density smoke, attributed to a significant amount
of recent seasonal fire activity along with a few possible wildfires, was
visible this morning extending from the western Carolinas northeastward
to southeastern Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and the Delmarva region, and
offshore of the Mid-Atlantic region. Cloudiness farther to the west and
southwest prevented much in the way of additional smoke detection in
satellite imagery.

Florida Panhandle…
A relatively small and narrow swath of leftover thin density smoke from
yesterday’s fire activity in the area was seen over a portion of the
Florida panhandle and the nearby Gulf of Mexico.

Mexico/Western Gulf of Mexico/Far Southern Texas…
A rather large area of primarily thin density smoke was visible over
eastern and southern Mexico, the Bay of Campeche and the western Gulf
of Mexico, far southern Texas, and a portion of the Pacific south of
Mexico. More localized patches of thin density smoke were embedded
within the thinner density smoke especially along and off the southern
coast of Mexico. This smoke was linked to seasonal fire activity across
Mexico with some contribution from oil rig flaring in the Bay of Campeche.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
